3. Context
Context is the environment where your product exists — brand goals, technology, and business needs.
It defines how your structure fits into the real world.
Example: Zara focuses on fashion and visual storytelling, so their context is brand-driven — even if it sometimes sacrifices clarity for style.

The 8 principles of information architecture
Good information architecture is built on a few core principles.
They help designers organize content in a way that’s clear, flexible, and easy to use.
1. Objects principle
Treat content as living, structured things — not just text or images.
Each piece of content has its own behavior, attributes, and lifecycle.
Example: On YouTube, every video has a title, thumbnail, creator, comments, and related content.
It’s not just “a video” — it’s a complex object with multiple layers.
2. Choices principle
Give users a few clear options instead of overwhelming them with too many.
People make faster and better decisions when they have fewer choices.
Example: Zara’s main menu has only a few top-level sections — Women, Men, Kids.
That keeps navigation simple and reduces cognitive load.
3. Disclosure principle
Show only what users need to know right now, not everything at once.
Give them a preview of what’s ahead before showing full details.
Example: When browsing Rozetka, you first see product categories.
You get more details only after you click on one — it’s step-by-step discovery.
4. Exemplars principle
Use examples to make categories easier to understand.
Example: On a recipe app, a category like “Healthy Snacks” might show a few images of smoothie bowls or granola bars.
This helps users instantly get what the category means.
5. Front doors principle
Assume that any page can be the first page a user lands on.
Make sure it’s clear what the site is about and how to navigate from there.
Example: If someone opens a product page from Google, they should still see the logo, main navigation, and links to other sections — just like on Rozetka or Amazon.
6. Multiple classification principle
Give users more than one way to find the same content.
Not everyone thinks the same way.
Example: In Rozetka, you can find a laptop by typing “MacBook,” using filters, or going through “Electronics → Laptops.”
Multiple paths, one goal.
7. Focused navigation principle
Each navigation menu should focus on one type of content.
Don’t mix products, articles, and support links in the same place.
Example: Apple separates Store, Mac, Support, and Newsroom.
Each section has its own clear navigation style.
8. Growth principle
Design your IA so it can grow with time — more content, products, or features.
Example: Netflix constantly adds new categories and series, but the structure stays consistent.
That’s a scalable information architecture.
How information architecture works in real products
Information Architecture is a big part of UX because it decides how users move through a product and how easy it is to find things.
1. YouTube
YouTube uses a flat or hybrid structure.
The main navigation is simple — Home, Explore, Subscriptions, Library.
Each video page connects to related content, channels, and playlists.
This structure helps users keep exploring without getting lost — that’s good IA in action.

2. Rozetka (online store)
Rozetka uses a deep, category-based structure with strong faceted navigation.
There are many product levels (category → subcategory → product), but filters and search make navigation easier.
That’s a practical example of IA: a clear hierarchy, simple labeling, and multiple ways to reach the same content.

3. Zara
Zara’s website uses a hybrid structure, focusing more on visuals than hierarchy.
The categories are not always clear, and sometimes it’s hard to understand where you are in the menu.
This shows what happens when visual design becomes stronger than information structure — beautiful, but less usable.

So, good Information Architecture = users find what they need quickly.
Weak Information Architecture = users get lost even in a nice design.
How to build an information architecture
When we build an information architecture, there are no strict rules.
Different designers use different shapes — and that’s okay.
What’s important is that your symbols have clear meaning and stay consistent in your diagram.
Here are some basic shapes you can use:
Rectangle (□) – for pages or screens.
Oval (◯) – for starting or ending points.
Diamond (◇) – for decisions (for example: “Yes / No”, “Login / Sign up”).
Arrow (→) – shows navigation or flow between elements.
Parallelogram (▱) – sometimes used for actions or data inputs.
Example: Start with an oval called “Home”.
From there, draw arrows to rectangles “Products”, “About”, “Contact”.
If there is a choice. for example, “Login or Register”, use a diamond.
The goal is to show structure, not to make art.
You can use Figma, Miro, or even paper — the most important thing is clarity and logic.

Conclusion
Information Architecture is not just about drawing boxes and arrows — it’s about creating clarity.
When users can easily find what they need, they feel comfortable using your product.
